Jesse Stuart has been and so important to me for, well, basically my entire life. I started reading these books, his "easy readers", very early in simple school and I progressed through all of his work every bit I grew up. Jesse Stuart has been then important to me for, well, basically my unabridged life. These books were important to u.s.a. growing up. They were well-nigh our culture, set correct here in Kentucky, and they had of import morals that all children need to learn near. They were quick merely meaningful reads, and I don't know honestly if I'd be the same reader I am today without them or without Mr. Stuart.

I'1000 distressing, but this is a pathetic excuse for a volume. I could have written something better when I was in third grade. From all the talk well-nigh it, yous would think that it was amazing, but no. Read information technology if you want, but information technology'southward got a very simple, anticipated plot that is hardly interesting. I'm sad, merely this is a pathetic excuse for a book. [Mild Rant Warning]
By its title, I had high hopes for this book. Unfortunately, it didn't pan out.

(view spoiler)[So the boy cheats a bit to get a soda and processed bar. So for "some reason," the lemon soda doesn't taste as yummy equally usual, and neither does the processed bar. (hide spoiler)] Ugh.

Here'south the matter, when nosotros cheat, there *ARE* rewards! I wish this would be taught more clearly. Not to encourage it, just because we're disobeying the aforementioned principle nosotros're trying to teach when we prevarication about this

By its title, I had high hopes for this book. Unfortunately, information technology didn't pan out.

(view spoiler)[And then the boy cheats a scrap to go a soda and candy bar. Then for "some reason," the lemon soda doesn't gustation as yummy as usual, and neither does the candy bar. (hide spoiler)] Ugh.

Here's the thing, when we cheat, in that location *ARE* rewards! I wish this would exist taught more clearly. Not to encourage information technology, but because we're disobeying the same principle nosotros're trying to teach when nosotros prevarication almost this!

What'southward great nearly this book is that (view spoiler)[the female parent, when she catches him in his dishonesty, sends him back to face the store owner--to face up his guilt/shame--and to make it right. He hates doing it, and yet he does it anyhow. (hide spoiler)] That function is awesome!

But could we stop with telling children (and ourselves) that if y'all always do what'due south right, you'll automatically be happy, and if y'all practise something wrong, you'll automatically exist miserable and everything will get wrong in your life?

That's simply non the manner life works. So allow'southward stop lying about information technology. Let's end giving kids a sack with holes because we desire too desperately for them to never do something bad. Rather, let's acknowledge that dishonest, unethical, or immoral choices oftentimes can have positive short-term consequences, and sometimes even positive long-term ones.

Then lets talk with them nearly other consequences such choices have. For example, how is our character affected? Who do we want to exist? What kind of a person? Or another example, let's talk nearly our human relationship with God who knows all. Let's talk nigh honoring our sense of right and incorrect and why it's valuable. Let's talk with them about honoring Divine promptings. etc.

And lets talk with our children about vision. Let'south discuss what kind of things we'll create in life if we go effectually with an attitude that dishonesty (or other dishonorable trait) is acceptable or justifiable, and is that what nosotros want? What kind of people (speaking of character) volition we choose to be with, and who would choose to be with the states?

Making a dishonest choice is not going to make (view spoiler)[the interesting turtle disappear or the minnows swim abroad so you can't see them, and it's non going to make your candy bar taste bad (hibernate spoiler)]. Then let's have the character to teach adept character honestly, please?

Fantastic book on moral choices for children. Yes it was created in an earlier simpler time, simply the values described transcend any cultural era. This book made a meaning impact on me as a vii year old, who had just discovered books. I could take written much of the plot from memory, and this is now 51 years subsequently, it had that much of an impact.

Children, Grandchildren, yes, they need books similar this rather than the type stuff typically available now.

Recommended for ages 5 through nine.

2.v

Jesse Stuart commencement published this story in 1954. So yeah, equally may reviewers have said, it is dated. Notwithstanding, the teaching for morals is not often done in this day and time. (I oasis't found an app for that.) This simple story (remember 1954, written for CHILDREN not adults) tells the value of honesty. With many descriptions of wild animals (rarely see that anymore either) this short story is but right for little boys and girls today to learn the value of doing the right thing.

Really lovely short story almost honesty, choices and consequences. The writing fashion is simple enough that this could be for a kid who is just embarking on affiliate books, just the descriptions of nature and emotion elevate the writing to something even an older reader can enjoy. As well prissy to come across a lesson on skillful moral grapheme outside of a church lesson. Sometimes those two go tied together, when actually information technology is of import for all people, whether religious or not, to espouse timeless values.

There are some character-building books that never get out of style. Every child should get a taste of what it feels like to purposefully do something incorrect, feel the ugliness of guilt, and know inside the eventual joy and lightness of owning up to a mistake. Skillful character is never out of way, no matter the twelvemonth. The message of this volume is just as valuable today.

I'm conflicted on the stars on this rating equally information technology is a short story near honesty—which is adept, merely it feels heavy in the commitment of the moral. Possibly information technology would experience a little less heavy to a much younger reader? I'll enquire my children who have read it almost their thoughts.
